The National Disability Insurance Scheme
What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a state, territory and federal government funded initiative that assists individuals with a permanent or significant disability that is likely to be lifelong.
What type of supports are funded by the NDIS?
Funding is based on what is ‘reasonable’ and 'necessary’. There are three types of support budgets that are funded in your NDIS plan.
Core supports
Capacity building
Support Coordination (COS)
Capital Supports
Transport
Core Supports
Core supports is about your everyday life. Things you do, things you need help with and the low cost, low risk equipment you may need to help you do things. You can move your money around in Core Supports - it is flexible. You can use more money on house cleaning if you do not want to get a gardener or vice versa.
Consumables: Purchasing everyday items such as continence products. This also includes low cost, low risk equipment - usually under $500.
Daily Activities: Assistance with activities that you would normally complete throughout the day such as self-care, shopping, Drs appointments etc.
Social and Community Participation: These are supports that help you engage in social or recreational activities for example, taking you to and from the gym, take you to meetings or group sessions, go to the movies and coffee. NDIS only fund the carers wage to take you to and from these activities. NDIS does not fund the activity you are undertaking.
Capacity Building - Improved Daily Living (CB Daily Activity)
This is the capacity building component. This includes any therapies that help to build your capacity to look after yourself.
Occupational Therapy
Physiotherapy
Psychology
Dietician
Exercise Physiologist
Diabetic Educator
Behaviour Specialist
You can move funding between therapies as you desire. However, funding cannot be moved between categories.
Support Coordination
This funding, is for a service to support you and help you with the implementation of your plan. They can provide participants with a list of providers for services and goods. Coordinators can organise appointments for you and liaise with your providers. They help you prepare for your plan review, making sure you get the best results. Support Coordination falls under the capacity building budget. Here at SADI we take pride in supporting our clients accessing the NDIS. We have a 100% success rate!
Capital Supports - Assistive Technology
This funding applies to expensive pieces of equipment and home/car modifications. All equipment and home/car modifications must have a quote which is approved by NDIS.
When the participant already has equipment, they will puta figure in this category for repairs.
Some examples of equipment and home modifications include:
Shower commode
Sit to stand aid
Special mattress
Beds
Some computer software
Wheelchairs, both electric and manual
Bathroom renovations
Note: This will not fund the purchase of a car/mover vans.
Transport
This funding is a contribution to your transportation costs and is paid fortnightly into your bank account.
How plans are managed
Agency managed: All invoices are sent to NDIS to for payment.
Plan managed: All invoices sent to a financial service provider paid for by NDIS, to manage the financial component of your plan.
Self-managed: Invoices sent to participant who claims the invoice through their NDIS portal.
